Did anyone actually learn anything new from the debate tonight?

Published by BobO at 11:33 pm under politics Edit This

Seriously - all partisan politics aside.  For anyone else out there that watched the second debate tonight - did you learn anything new about either candidate?  Me - NO!  I thought the whole idea behind debates was for us to learn something new about the candidates.

No matter what questions were asked of them - they both kept going back to their talking points and repeated almost word-for-word the exact same things they said in the last debate.  There were very few instances where either one of them actually answered the questions asked to them.  Neither Obama nor McCain answered the very first question - which was regarding what they planned on doing to help retirees who lost money due to the bailouts and economic crisis.

Neither one of them actually answered the question regarding whether or not they consider healthcare as a commodity (this is different from the other question whether they think healthcare insurance is a right, luxury, or responsibility).  With regards to all the other questions - they would answer the real question with a quick one-liner then go back to their talking points.

Gee friggin whiz!  I hate politicians!  Just answer the freakin question already!

So - seriously - I know those on the left already think Obama is great and all of his ideas are great and those on the right already think McCain is great and all of his ideas are great - so put that aside. From an objective standpoint - did you REALLY learn anything new about either candidate?

Regarding the question as to whether health insurance is a right, luxury, or responsibility - I’ll answer that question tomorrow night - I actually had to answer this question already.

I learned that Tom Brokaw is the worst moderator ever. Seriously, I know third graders that could’ve kept that circus under more control than him.

I want to see a debate moderated by Mike Ditka, Bill Cower, and Chris Berman.

I learned nothing new and became very tired of them either not answering the questions or rather citing each other’s policies. That gets really old

I agree with three degrees - I’d love to see Ditka moderate.

We got the same answers and the same attacks from the last debate. However, I did learn that you can vote for a bill with 150 million dollars in earmarks and still call yourself a reformer who doesn’t vote for bills with earmarks.

What I learned is that they aren’t prepared to risk upsetting the voters by giving more information than they already have. Obama’s got things swinging in his direction and obviously doesn’t want to upset the apple cart, and McCain’s already in trouble and can’t afford to say the wrong thing and lose more ground.

ROFL Bill! Seriously, I wonder if the McCain voters even picked that up - he’s a maverick y’know. You betcha he is!

ThreeDegrees: I have an 8 year old who could have controlled the debaters better - not to mention give a convincing argument as to why non-environmentally friendly cars should have higher tax penalties, and he’s certainly more interesting to listen to on this stuff than either of the candidates last night!

Well - being a huge Steeler’s fan - I actually have something I agree with 3degrees on for once.

Jodapoet - same here. Got real tired real fast.

Bill/katieanne - actually - I did pick up on that myself. I also cringed when he started talking about nationalizing mortgages.

But, have to disagree with you on one thing there Katieanne - given the technology today - all of our cars manufactured in the U.S. are environmentally friendly. The eco-terrorist lobbyists and those in congress beholden to them keep moving the bar. Just because a car runs on gasoline does not make it non-environmentally friendly.

Can you explain to me how a hydro-powered car (not hydrogen) is eco-friendly? Isn’t that taking badly needed water that could be put in drought prone areas just to fuel our cars? How are battery powered cars eco-friendly? Don’t you need to plug it in still drawing electricity from the grid? You’re still indirectly using oil and natural gas to power that car.

Some cars are just more eco-friendly than others…bu…in the U.S. we don’t have non-environmentally friendly cars (unless they are antiques without catalytic converters).

Well, if nothing else, we can always shoot the shit about the Steelers, then.

I think I’ll write to the Obama campaign and tell them to seriously consider Heinz Ward for Secy. of State in their new administration.

I could dispute this with stats, but the point I was making was that my 8 year old can give straight answers to current issues, answer questions highlighting reasons and defend his viewpoint - which is more than these politicians can.

In Sweden where I live they are hot on emmissions and part of the yearly test that every car on the road must go through includes a test on how much pollution they put out - if you’re over the legal limit you have to get your car fixed and retested within a month or take the car off the road. Any car failing the annual test and not retested within the month has its registration number passed to the police who will then stop the car if it’s seen on the roads! Pity they aren’t so hot on the amount of paper (another environmental issue) they use on bureaucratic nonsense!
