There was a debate last night?

Published by BobO at 5:32 pm under politics Edit This

To say I was disappointed is an understatement.  That was no debate.  That was two politicians giving stump speeches.  I thought the purpose of a debate was to learn something new about the candidates.  All I got out of it was the same thing I already knew - Obama will continue to push a socialist agenda and McCain is strong on defense.

Neither candidate looked good as far as debates go.  Obama kept saying the same things over and over and McCain kept saying the same things over and over.  Lehrer tried his best to get them to debate one another - but - to no avail.  McCain continued to address his answers directly to Lehrer and, while Obama did make a couple attempts to look at McCain in his responses, he either played to the camera or directly to Lehrer.

It doesn’t surprise me at all that the lefties and the media say Obama won - we already know they favor Obama.  Obama could have failed miserably and they still would have said Obama won.  McCain, on the other hand, needed to be on his game and really be a step above Obama to be declared victorious.  Instead, he never really answered the questions posed to him.  There were a few times where Obama flat out lied regarding how we got in this economic mess - and - McCain didn’t even respond to it.  We all know that the CRA forced on private businesses caused this economic meltdown.  Yet, McCain allowed Obama to blame it on Bush and Bush only.  This mess started well before GWB ever became President.  It started when Carter forced private businesses to take high risk loans.  It continued when Clinton forced private businesses to take on even more high risk loans without proof of income or proof of ability to repay the loan.  It was furthered when Bush forced private businesses to take on more high risk loans without a 20% down payment.  But, McCain just let it pass.  This tells me that he agrees with Obama.

Obama appeared stronger on the economic side only because McCain wasn’t aggressive at all.  McCain was strong on defense and foreign policy as expected because of his experience.  It was a draw if anything.  One of the things going around right now regarding the debate is that McCain never once mentioned the middle-class.  I say, So what?  I’m middle class.  I don’t expect the government to do anything for me…and…neither should anyone else in this country.

Our government was not set up to take care of the people - regardless of what income level you fall in.  It was set up to give everyone the opportunity to prosper WITHOUT government interference.  Obama just wants to grow the government bigger and give more stuff away at our expense.  Benjamin Franklin warned that once the people learned they can vote themselves a portion of the treasury, democracy would be dead.  This is what Obama is proposing - and this is what the people want.  For those of you crying - “what’s in it for me” - you’re pathetic.

Remember what JFK said? “…my fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you - ask what can you do for your country.”  Obama is no JFK - and - this debate proved it. McCain is no Ronald Reagan - and this debate proved that as well.

As for the debate?  One word - BORING!

The only thing I’d add is that foreign policy was supposed to be McCain’s strong suit, and the one thing he was supposed to annihilate Obama on. CW was that Obama was piss poor in the debate format, while McCain could rail off the talking points and win easily. I didn’t see that last night. While lackluster, I did see one candidate focus on policy, either philosophical or practical, while the other one focused on personal anecdotes and snark. Conventional wisdom also said that a draw was a much as a win for Obama, and the poll numbers among independent voters/undecided voters seem to agree. After all, they are the only ones that matter at this point, the rest of us have made up our minds. Still can’t wait til the VP debates, though.
